In the mid 80s, AppleTalk and AFP was a boon for us guys in the printing industry, who needed access to other computers on a network, as well as print to a laserwriter. I really hope QNAP improves their SMB implementation, as I don't plan on staying on the chatty AFP protocol forever. Plus, all the Finder attributes are visible. We switched to AFP (reluctantly, I might add), and the speed improvement is like night and day for the initial uncached directory access in the Finder. Only one color tag showed up in a directory. Synology's SMB implements support for all the Finder's color tags and is much faster on the Macs (late model iMacs), compared to the QNAP we upgraded to. This is interesting, because we just made the transition from a Synology NAS (DS414 on RAID 5) to QNAP (TS-453 on RAID 10) and found out the QNAP implementation is really different. color marks, funky folder and file name attributes.
